Is There Anything You Can Put In Spagetti To Take Heart Burn Away?

My husband gets horriable heart burn when I cook spagetti. I love it so it’s obviously a problem. I have heard you can put sugar or baking soda or baking powder…I can’t remember. I am looking for something to neutralize the acidity of the tomatoes!
Any help?

Why add something to the spaghetti? Instead, he should take Prilosec OTC prior to eating anything that causes his heart burn. Believe me, this is what I take, and I am a chef whom loves to eat all types of cuisine, especially favoring ones that give me heart-burn; i,e. mexican, italian, etc. =)

You can put in baking soda, but that will change the flavor a bit.

Sorry if this sounds obvious, but has he tried just chewing on tums or rolaids, or taking a pill like prilosec? It might be especially effective if you help him remember to do it before the heartburn hits. It's neutralizing the acid just like baking soda would, but you don't have to sacrifice the bright flavor of the acid.

Try using different brands of tomatoes or jarred sauce, whichever you use. My husband was the same way. If I use anything buy my home canned tomatoes or Furmano's tomatoes he gets horrible heartburn. I guess not all canned tomatoes are the same. I can't even sneak in some Hunts or Contadina tomato paste, it will get him right away.

Take your hubby to the Dr. If he gets bad heartburn from eating certain foods he probably has GERD or a Hiatial hernia. I too suffered like this for years. Was told I had ulcers & put on very mild diet. This went on for years till a new Doc suggested a scope down the throat. Acid reflux can (about 2 %) result in cancer. I'm lucky, caught it early. Still in the Barretts stage which is pre cancer but I'm clear now. AND I can eat almost anything. The drug is omeprozole. Available OTC in a mild dose as… Czytaj więcej »

Adding a bit of sugar neutralizes the acid in tomatoes. I always add 1 tsp of sugar to spaghetti sauce.

Ground ginger also helps digestion. A bit of that could help. I always put it in my turkey stuffing which gives my husband terrible indigestion.

A little sugar or brown sugar will reduce the acidity.

I find shredding a carrot into the sauce helps with the acidity.
